Restoration of an early 70’s Gibson SG200
I was asked to complete an overhaul and restoration of an early 70’s Gibson SG200. I had not seen one of these guitars before so I had to do some research into its history.
From what I could find out Gibson only made a few thousand of these guitars between 1971 and 1972. The range included the SG 150, SG 200 and the SG 250. Gibson marketed these guitars as an entry level instrument.
On the face of it This SG 200 looks like a standard SG. But there are a few differences. The main difference is that the guitar does not have an angled neck to body construction. The neck is on the same plane as the body.
The other obvious difference is the two pickup slider switches.
This guitar had been lent out to someone who did not look after it very well. There was quite a lot of damage to the body and headstock.
So in discussion with the owner it was agreed that I would do the following work on the guitar;
- Remove the finish and repair any body damage
- Refret the guitar
- Arrange to have the guitar refinished in nitrocellulose lacquer
- Overhaul the electronics
- Reassemble and setup the guitars
And here is the completed guitar;
